Keith Joiner, MD, MPH, dean of the UA College of Medicine, commends the commitment of women as leaders in academic medicine
The March 2007 Monthly Update from College of Medicine Dean Keith Joiner, MD highlights women leaders who play a central role in the College of Medicine. The except below is from that monthly update:
"It . gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Ana Maria Lopez, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Pathology, has been appointed to the newly created position of Associate Dean for Outreach and Multicultural Affairs. In this role Ana Maria will have two overarching responsibilities. The first is to ensure that our efforts related to diversity and multicultural affairs are well coordinated....
The second major component of Ana Maria's new responsibilities is an expansion of her current role as the Medical Director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program. With the creation of the Institute of Telemedicine and Telehealth (T-Health Institute), under Dr. Ron Weinstein's leadership, there is the opportunity to link even more strongly our telemedicine and telehealth efforts with our multicultural and outreach focus. Ana Maria is ideally positioned to conduct those activities. Ron has graciously agreed to support her broadened role in the Institute of Telemedicine and Telehealth, in her capacity as Associate Dean for Outreach and Multicultural Affairs......
Dr. Mindy Fain, Director of the Arizona Reynolds Program of Applied Geriatrics, and Co-Director of the Center on Aging, has done a phenomenal job in implementing the aims of the Reynolds award, which is structured to train faculty leaders in geriatric medicine, and to embed that learning throughout the College of Medicine.
Dr. Leslie Boyer has come on board with incredible enthusiasm and drive to coordinate the administration of the University of Arizona component of the Clinical and Translational Science Award application. She works effectively with her counterparts at ASU and TGen and is a tireless advocate for our efforts.
Drs. Tammie Bassford, and Kathy Reed, as Department Heads of Family and Community Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology, respectively, bring an impressive commitment to equity, fairness, and humanism into the programs that they lead or have championed. Although Dr. Vicki Chandler is not a member of the College of Medicine, she functions as one. She is always available, always upbeat, and always supportive of creating linkages between the College and BIO5............"
Women Faculty in the College of Medicine
(continued)........."the
University of Arizona College of Medicine] had the highest
percent increase in the number of women faculty in the tenure
track of any College in the University. A 7.4% increase
over the last 6 years (e.g. since 2000). In the current fiscal
year, we were second highest behind the College of Public Health
in the total grant dollars per tenure track faculty. The numerical
value for the College of Medicine was two fold higher than that
of the next highest college. We were also identified as one
of the units contributing most substantially to vital public
service at the University.......These are all accomplishments
for which collectively we should be very proud, and for which
we have been recognized by University administration.. . ."
In an Addendum to the Dean's Monthly Update, Dr. Joiner commends
other women faculty not previously mentioned:
"First is Dr. Rebecca Potter, our Associate Dean for Graduate
Medical Education. In addition to her normal tasks, she and
her team, including Dr. Victoria Murrain, Special Assistant
to the Dean for Graduate Medical Education, coordinated 23 residency
program site visits last year. The response was outstanding,
with 90% of our programs receiving 4-5 year accreditations --
the best we have ever done.
Their work has built on the efforts of women who direct the residency programs, including Dr. Leslie Barton (Pediatrics), Dr. Shona Dougherty (Radiation Oncology), Dr. Mindy Fain (Geriatrics), Dr. Anne Herring (Clinical Psychology), Dr. Julia Indik (Cardiology), Dr. Patricia Lebensohn (Family Medicine), Dr. Joy Logan (Nephrology), Dr. Lisa Rimsza (Molecular Genetic Pathology), and Dr. Catherine Spier (Hematopathology)....."
