In October 2003, the University of Arizona received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services the prestigious designation of a National Center of Excellence (CoE) in Women’s Health. The National CoEs in Women’s Health offer the nation a model to provide comprehensive and innovative health care solutions to women, especially minority and underserved women. The National CoEs unite clinical care with scientific research, medical training and professional education, community outreach, and leadership.

The CoEs provide the following:
Clinical care for women with an emphasis on prevention and early detection of diseases, disorders, and conditions;
Research on women's health issues and the ways that women and men differ in health and disease status;
Outreach to communities to promote health, prevent disease and reduce health disparities;
Education by integrating women's health into the medical school curricula;
Leadership for women in academic medicine;
Evaluation to assess the above CoE programs; and
Networking to form alliances with consumer groups, business groups, health professional organizations and public policy leaders.

The mission of UA’s National CoE in Women’s Health is to improve health and promote wellness of all women throughout the lifecycle. The UA National CoE is led by a distinguished and diverse group of UA administrators, clinicians, and researchers with input from community members. The staff is committed to the idea that women deserve health care that supports their unique needs in every stage of their lives; is based on the most recent scientific evidence, and is sensitive to their language, culture, beliefs and lifestyle.

The University of Arizona is proud to be one of 21 National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health. In addition, there are 14 Community Centers of Excellence (CCOE) with a similar mission set in communities. Arizona, with a CCOE in Nogales, is one of only three states to have both a National CoE and a CCOE.
